United States of Affluence: New list rates the richest people in each state for the first time
- List was compiled by Forbes magazine and topped by Bill Gates, who lives in Meridan, Washington
- Gates is worth almost $80 billion a year
- The poorest rich person in America was money manager Robert Hilliam of Alaska, worth $320 million annually
- Only 10 on the list were women, and only 10 were heirs to their fortunes
From tires in Arizona to retail stores in Wisconsin, the vast wealth of America comes from all different avenues.
But for the first time, the richest person in each state has been listed as part of a new 'road map to wealth' by Forbes magazine.
While many were obvious - Bill Gates, of course, who lives in Washington and has a net worth of $78.8 billion, and Oracle founder Larry Ellison in California, who earns $52.8 billion a year - some states were harder.
A team of reporters were sent to discover the fattest wallets in areas not typically known for high-flyers.
Alabama, North Dakota, Delaware, New Mexico, Vermont and Alaska were the only states to lack billion dollar fortunes.
The magazine also noted that only 10 of the 50 are women, lead by Wal-Mart heiress and the world's richest woman, Christy Walton, whose fortune tops at almost $40 billion.
Richest person in each state: Seen here at the top 10 richest people in America by state. Bill Gates, who lives in Meridan, Washington, obviously took the top spot, while Jacqueline Mars, the 73-year-old heiress to the Mars candy company fortune, came in at number 10. Other familiar faces were the Walton family and the 'Oracle of Omaha' Warren Buffett, whose net worth is a whopping $70.2 billion
Also, only 10 are of the 50 are heirs to their fortunes.
That means the remaining 40 have created their own wealth, or earned by buying companies and expanding them.
'To compile this list, we not only tracked down easier-to-value public assets, but we dug up valuations of more difficult-to-assess private ones—oil wells in New Mexico, coal mines in Alabama, properties on the Vegas strip,' Forbes reporter Abram Brown noted.
The poorest rich person was established as Robert Hilliam of Alaska.
Hilliam's $320 million fortune was made through money management.
